Commissioned by Sulwhasoo (A premium cosmetic brand of Amore Pacific). Sulwhasoo holds Sulwha Cultural Exhibition every year with different themes. This year, Cho was commissioned to respond to the most popular Korean traditional tale, ‘The two love stars: Altair and Vega’ as part of Sulwha Cultural Exhibition at Sulwhasoo Flagship store in Seoul.
In this exhibition, as a way to modernly reinterpret the fate and destiny of the Altair and Vega, Cho made an animation that portrays the movement of stars as metaphor for the existence of time and translates light-years into actual years.
설화문화전은 아모레퍼시픽의 대표 브렌드 설화수에서 매년 주최하는 전시로써 매년 다른 주제로 진행된다. 올해는 견우와 직녀가 전시의 주제였다. 견우와 직녀 이야기는 칠석에 얽힌 옛이야기이며 밤하늘의 별자리를 보며 그 유래를 이야기 할 수 있는 설화 이기도 하다.
조애리는 별들의 움직임을 통해 시간의 개념에 관한 작품을 만들고 싶었다. 하늘에 떠 있는 견우성과 직녀성은 실제로 만날 수 없다. 둘은 빛의 속도로 16년동안 달려야 만날 수 있을 정도로 멀리 떨어져 있다. 작가는 별들의 움직임을 시간의 존재 방식에 비유하여 광년의 시간을 실제시간으로 환산하고 함축하여 견우와 직녀의 운명과 인연을 현대적으로 재해석한 작품을 만들었다.
