OCCUPANCY OF THE SELF: HYBRID MOMENTS

A Groundbreaking Exploration of Climate Evolution, AI, and Identity

From September 22-30, 2023, Elly Cho presented her solo exhibition, Occupancy of the Self: Hybrid Moments, at This Is Not A Church in Seoul, Korea. The exhibition brought together painting, video installations, performance art, and film, reflecting Cho’s interdisciplinary approach and ongoing exploration of identity, climate evolution, and emerging technologies.

A Performance That Became an Artwork

At the VIP opening on April 22, 2023, Cho premiered a live dance performance, which she directed and choreographed in collaboration with Myeong Suk Na, Director of the Korea Dance Association. This special performance was filmed as part of Cho’s art documentary, which investigates the effects of climate change on the environment and the speculative emergence of hybrid species in a future landscape.

The audience played an active role, witnessing the creation of an artwork within an artwork—a participatory experience that blurred the boundaries between performance and visual art.

Artificial Intelligence & Climate Speculation

A significant element of the exhibition was Cho’s integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a drawing tool. In collaboration with CJ OliveNetworks and its AI Research team, she explored the intersection of technology, Korean folk history, and environmental change.

Using text-to-image face generation, GAN-based Image Synthesis, and Image Blending, the AI analyzed historical references and visual data to generate hybrid beings—a speculative vision of future life forms shaped by climate change. These digital renderings informed Cho’s paintings and drawings, which depicted a post-human future where humans and nature evolve in unpredictable ways.

Merging Science, Technology & Art

By combining traditional artistic methods with cutting-edge AI technology, Cho’s work challenged the boundaries of contemporary art. The exhibition provided a thought-provoking dialogue on humanity’s evolving relationship with nature, questioning how climate change, cultural memory, and technology shape our identities and futures.

인공지능(AI)과 기후 변화가 만들어낼 미래

이번 전시에서 가장 주목할 만한 요소 중 하나는 AI(인공지능)를 창작 도구로 활용한 점입니다. 엘리 조는 CJ올리브네트웍스 AI 연구팀과 협력하여, 기술과 한국 전통 문화, 그리고 환경 변화의 교차점을 탐구했습니다.

그 과정에서 텍스트-이미지 변환(face generation), GAN 기반 이미지 합성(GAN-based Image Synthesis), 이미지 블렌딩(Image Blending) 기법을 활용하여, AI가 기존 데이터를 학습하고 새로운 하이브리드 존재들을 생성하도록 했습니다. 이 하이브리드 존재들은 인간과 동물의 특성을 결합한 형태로, 기후 변화 이후의 새로운 생태계를 가정한 작품의 주제가 되었습니다.

과학, 기술, 예술의 융합

전통적인 예술 기법과 첨단 AI 기술을 결합한 이번 전시는, 기후 변화, 문화적 기억, 기술이 인간의 정체성과 미래를 어떻게 형성하는지에 대한 깊이 있는 대화를 이끌어냈습니다.
