Elly Cho is an award-winning visual artist and a filmmaker whose work explores the intersection of nature, environment, and human behavior across diverse media—including painting, mixed media, video, and performance art. Her practice is rooted in ecological research, personal memory, and cultural storytelling, often using familiar landscapes to evoke imaginative, sensory experiences.
Cho approaches artmaking through the lens of narrative and cultural landscape, frequently drawing from her own life to create symbolic and emotional dialogues between people and place. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in major screenings and festivals such as the Times Square Midnight Moment (New York), AVIFF – Cannes Art Film Festival, and Asia Film Art International Film Festival (Hong Kong).
She is the recipient of the Sunny Art Prize (London) and has received international recognition for her work, including multiple awards for Best Experimental Film, Best Dance Choreography Film, and Best Director at festivals worldwide. Her works are part of public collections including the Seoul Museum of Art, MOCA Busan, and the Musée Cantonale des Beaux-Arts du Valais (Switzerland). Exhibitions include Nature’s Tempo (Korean Cultural Center New York) and Going Green (Queens Art Express, New York).
Cho has participated in artist residencies such as the 3-D Sculpture Park Residency (Switzerland) and AHL Foundation Residency (New York). She is also active in performance art, with works like Sounds of Fragment: Ecological Dreams presented at the Nam June Paik Art Center, Seoul Innovation Park, and the Gyeonggi Media Performance Festival.
Born in Seoul, where she currently resides, Cho was educated in Switzerland, the UK, and the United States. She holds a BA and MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art (London) and an MA in Art Education from Columbia University, where she was awarded the Teachers College Medal for Distinguished Service. She has taught visual art and theory at universities in Korea.
